When “Team Coloso” left you last year, we promised you exciting
news in 2004. The exciting news is that Ponderosa Coloso has
made his way to number 4 on the top ten stallion list. What an accomplishment
for this great stallion and “Team Coloso” as this is his third
consecutive appearance on this prestigious list. What an honor to
share with the other great breeding stallions on this list as bring recognized
for the performance of their offspring in the show ring and the passion
shared by their owners, trainers, and exhibitors. It can be described
only as a love for this breed and stallion to continually exhibit his
offspring at the highest level of competition and find these horses in
the winner’s circle at the regional and national levels.
“Team Coloso” members are drawn together by a strong nucleus
which consists of three parts. Ponderosa Coloso is still the horse
to which your breath stops as he is ridden and exhibited on special occasions.
His presence can be felt giving someone the feeling they are watching
an exhibition that will remain with them for many memories to come.
Only owning one of his offspring comes close to that same feeling as watching
his movements and offering his brio for your taking. Owner Paul
“Woody” Mercer has given many new owners of Coloso offspring
the thrill of a lifetime that none would give back nor even consider selling
at any price. Team Coloso owes much to Woody and his purchase of
this great stallion so we may enjoy him here in the United States.
Bill and Kitty Minter are the final part of the equation as his manager
and speak of their love for this wonderful stallion. They are definitely
Coloso’s very special friends. Bill has the enviable insight
to make the decisions that keep “Team Coloso” showing throughout
the year and helping every team member reach for the stars with these
wonderful Coloso offspring.
The top ten stallion list is a barometer to which stallions are measured for
their ability to pass to their get the attributes which enable them to compete
on the very highest levels. This years accomplishments of Coloso’s
offspring are milestones which we will measure future years’ success
both at the regional and national levels. Coloso’s offspring won
5 National high point titles in bella forma and pleasure division during 2004.
There were many regional high point titles as well confirming Coloso offspring
are very talented and admirably trainable to compete at such levels.
The high point of the year for this stallion was at the National Championships
in Perry, Gal. where his offspring were extremely competitive in all classes
they were shown in. Coloso won the Get of Sire National Championship
for the third consecutive year against very stiff competition. Team
Coloso won 8 National Championships and 3 Reserve National Championships both
in bella forma and the pleasure and performance divisions. Also the
2004 Breeders Sweepstakes (fillies) was won by Team Coloso again assuring
that his get competes at a very high level early on. The “icing
on the cake” was Hechicera PM winning the 2004 Paso Fino Horse Association
“Horse of the Year”. Showing this mare throughout the year
again made the team aware of the natural ability this stallion passes to his
get and putting the “fun” factor back in it for all of us.
Reaching these accomplishments could not be made without the work and determination
of many who call themselves part of “Team Coloso”. At any
given show these members pride themselves with their team hats but more with
the horses they bring to exhibit. We would be remiss not to mention
our members that range throughout the PFHA regions. A special call is
made to Shaw Laney who brings these horses to their peak performance under
saddle throughout the year. A horse has not made a more special friend
than Shaw. Special team members from the north are recognized at Buttermilk
Farms with Leo Lomangino and Luis Figueroa. Thank you for your support
and being the new owners of Hechicera PM at the nationals. We will miss
this special mare and hope you enjoy all that is to come. Sherry Lute
worked with several prospects during the summer and we would like to thank
her for her work. Dale Graves provided tremendous help in showing and
logistics at the show to whom we are extremely grateful. Ken Bragg came
onboard this year and has enjoyed much success with his gelding winning on
the regional level. Steve and Ann Crossman also joined Team Coloso this
year winning a national high point award but more so enjoying the special
filly they show frequently. As we move south, a special thanks goes
to Carmen Micheletti and owners of Coloso offspring who enjoyed much success.
Also, thanks to William Cuervo and Lena Castro who again showed their beautiful
mare. Mr. Carlos Tobon represented Team Coloso in the Southwest region
during the year. Our Tennessee troop consisting of Paul & Fran Klippa,
Rod & Shirley Jackson, and Randy Wiel made us proud with their performance.
Here in North Carolina we would like to thank Brenda Sparks and Jerry Holder
for their efforts. A special thanks goes out to Angelo Usategui for
his third place finish in the Fabulous Fino Futurity ride on a Coloso filly
– Congratulations. Please accept with gratitude if I have neglected
to mention the remaining members of Team Coloso. There are many who
contribute with their horses and intangibles, which are too many to mention.
I cannot even explain how much my wife Carol and son Parker have endured during
this year to enable me to enjoy a thrill that I will never forget: but was
beyond my most imaginable dreams. But this is why we are members of
Team Coloso – to make our adult dreams come true! I wish all many
blessings throughout the coming year!
